Optimization of Computer Automated Ultrasonic Inspection System. For Complex Air-Frame Components

Abstract

This report describes the work conducted on a program to optimize the hardware and software of a computer automated ultrasonic inspection system which was developed under a previous Air Force Contract F33615-72-C-1828. The hardware modifications included improvements of the scan drive mechanism to increase inspection speed and development of improved ultrasonic circuitry to perform zone scanning inspections. Software developments included: (1) implementation of the zone scanning inspection method, (2) programs for signal processing to enhance random flaw detection, and (3) development of a Computer Aided Design Data Control (CADDC) method to interface the inspection system with data generated by Computer Aided Design (CAD) approach to component design.
