Life Raft Study - February 1978

Abstract

A life raft study was conducted from the CGC EVERGREEN in February 1978. Of the six life rafts tested, only one was seen capsizing. The Givens life raft suffered the most damage with both the canopy and ballast bag being destroyed. Leeway for life rafts with improved ballast systems was found to follow the equation U(life raft) = 0.042 U(wind) + 0.060. This type of life raft was noted to drift at a much slower rate when the canopy was not deployed. In over 80% of the cases the life rafts drifted within 45 degrees of the downwind direction.
