Contrast Enhancement Methods for Video Systems.

Abstract

Methods have been studied of improving the display contrast of targets observed by TV search and tracking systems. Typical camera components can be improved upon several fold by spectral selection, lens selection, and optimum exposure of high resolution vidicons. Stationary noise can be reduced by pixel sensitivity equalization (PSE) and dynamic noise can be reduced by multiframe averaging. Local area gain and brightness control (LAGBC) can be applied to raise the differential contrast of small, target-sized areas after reducing the total scene contrast. Schemes for rendering PSE and LAGBC are diagrammed. About 70 items of technical and commercial literature are cited. (Author)
