Stimulated Emission by Relativistic Electrons Traversing. A Periodic Magnetic Field.

Abstract

A historical survey of scientific developments predating the free electron laser (FEL) concept is presented. A general theory of operation of the FEL is discussed. The use of electromagnets to generate a static periodic magnetic field of alternating polarity (as a pump wave source) is proposed. Preliminary measurements with respect to the proposed electromagnet design are analyzed. (Author)
