A Global Ionospheric Model

Abstract

This paper describes a global ionospheric model used by NRL to analyze the performance of high-frequency radar systems. The model described is based primarily on numerical maps derived from reports by a network of vertical sounding stations. Indices for the E, F sub 1, and F sub 2 layers are used to generate electron density profiles. An exponential tail is added to the E-region profile to account for D-region effects. Numerical maps of the sporadic-E indices are available but are not included in the electron density profile. This paper also describes several applications of the ionospheric model and includes an atlas of plasma frequency contour maps generated with the model.
