'Mechanistic Studies of the Effect of Lead Salts on Double Base Propellant Combustion. The Use of Model Systems'.

Abstract

In this program the effects of lead oxide (PbO) on the thermal decomposition of n-propyl nitrate have been studied as a model for double-base propellants containing lead salts as ballistic modifers. Only a small effect has been oberved with n-propyl nitrate at the temperature range investigated, 157-186 degrees C, but in the course of this study a very powerful catalysis by lead oxide of the thermal decomposition of nitoralkanes was discovered and investigated in some detail.
