Preliminary Investigations of a Method to Predict Line-of-Sight Capabilities.
Abstract
Recent basic research has shown that the geometry of the earth's surface is orderly. This research has progressed now to the point where it is possible to try for some practical applications of such knowledge. This report discusses the application of terrain research to line-of-sight problems for both military and civilian operations. It deals with the design, construction and preliminary test of a mathematical model for predicting the availability of unobstructed lines of sight from high points into valleys out as far as 20 miles from the viewing point. Results of these tests indicate the merits of the model and the direction of further research. A theoretical discussion of this possible research is presented. (Author)
