Manuscript Holdings of the Military History Research Collection.

Abstract

The U.S. Army Military History Research Collection has a large and rapidly expanding manuscript collection. It covers the entire range of American military history from colonial times to the present. The Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, and the mid-Twentieth Century period are especially well represented. Many present-day and recently retired officers have deposited their papers here. Some of these generals have also recorded their reminiscences and reflections as part of the 'Senior Officers Debriefing Program'; transcripts of these recollections are available. Most of this manuscript material necessarily relates to regular and volunteer land forces of the United States. A few holdings, however, do pertain to the Coast Guard, Navy, Marines, and various air services. Some also deal with non-American forces and conflicts. A few, moreover, concern civilians caught up in the midst of war. This bibliography describes approximately 52% of present holdings.
