Roles and Missions of Airborne, Ranger, and Special Forces in Contingency Operations

Abstract

This thesis addresses the roles and missions of U.S. Army airborne, ranger, and special forces in rapid reaction contingency operations. The study focuses on the requirements for and the missions appropriate for each of these elite units within the context of the more likely 'half war' contingency of the nations's 'one-and-a-half-war' strategy. Specifically examined are historical perspectives, current organization, mission and capabilities, as well as deployment and employment concepts.
