Propeller Performance at Zero Forward Speed

Abstract

Static thrust data from propeller whirl tests at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, and several other sources, on numerous propellers are analyzed and correction factors are derived which correlate these data. Standard curves for static thrust are given for 2, 3, and 4-bladed single rotation propellers, and for 6 and 8-bladed dual-rotation propellers. These standard curves, together with the correction factors, are used to predict the static shaft thrust of any conventional propeller to within about 5%. With the exception of a two-bladed Clark-Y propeller curve, all standard curves are for propellers utilizing MACA 16-series airfoil sections.
