Aerostructure Nondestructive Evaluation by Thermal Field Techniques.

Abstract

Certain types of flaws and damage in composite materials are not readily observable by visual examination. Examples of these are delaminations, blindside impact damage, and sub-surface laminar cracks. Programs are currently underwaty to develop methods of detecting such flaws by many techniques, among which are X-ray, neutron radiography, ultrasonic transmission and reflectance, eddy current, and thermography. This report describes results of an experimental and analytical research investigation to evaluate infrared thermography as an NDE tool to locate and structural damage which are not easily located by visual examination. Also discussed are possible applications to aluminum structures. (Author)
