Racial Harmony Training for Company Commanders: A Preliminary Evaluation

Abstract

This report evaluates the effectiveness of this training with an appropriate experimental design, the training was presented to 19 company commanders, who were assigned to the experimental group. Seventeen other commanders were assigned to a control group. Immediately after training, commanders in both groups completed tests measuring knowledge and skills acquired in race relations; 45 days later, enlisted soldiers, key subordinates, and the commanders themselves completed surveys that evaluated the commander and the unit in race relations. Records of several types of administrative action were also obtained for this time period.
