SCHEDULER: A Computer Program for Scheduling Administration of Performance Tests.
Abstract
This report describes SCHEDULER, a computer program developed by Desmatics, Inc. as an aid in solving a particular type of scheduling problem. The fact that SCHEDULER is implemented on a computer is only significant in terms of the speed with which a scheduling run can be made. The use of a computer performs no special magic in this particular scheduling application, nor in any other for that matter. The computer program is only a formal statement of an algorithm which has been devised to perform a task in compliance with a set of rules. The algorithm could just as well be accomplished with paper and pencil, but a computer does the job much faster and, once the program is properly tested and 'debugged', more accurately. This report defines the type of problem addressed by SCHEDULER, indicates the approach employed by the program in attacking the problem, lists the capabilities and limitations of the program, discusses some of the runs which have been made and presents the conclusions which have been drawn from these runs. The report also suggests some further developments which would enhance the program's efficiency. The appendices provide a technical description and a flow chart of the progam.
