Commercial Vessel Safety. Risk Assessment Study. Volume I. Survey of Data for Marine Risk Assessment.

Abstract

The effort discussed in this volume involved a survey and evaluation of data applicable to the evaluation of the risks involved in marine operations. This survey forms part one of a three part risk assessment study for the U. S. Coast Guard. Volume II is a survey and evaluation of risk assessment methodologies and Volume III is a demonstration and evaluation of the applications of selected methodologies and data to specific risk assessments involving barge transport of hazardous chemicals. Twenty three data systems in the following categories were reviewed: marine safety activities, marine pollution, marine traffic, vessel repair costs, vessel accidents, personnel injuries, vessel population, and vessel violation injuries. Discussions of each system include, where appropriate information is available, sources of the data, procedures for collecting and recording the data, and potential error sources.
