Development of the Neodymium Pentaphosphate (NPP) Laser

Abstract

The structural properties of NPP are examined and the effect of twin domain boundaries on light propagation are discussed. Spectroscopic properties of NPP and other lanthanide pentaphosphates are outlined. The advantages of NPP as a laser material for miniature rangefinder and long distance fiber optic application are discussed. Laser and device considerations are reviewed and a miniature NPP laser cavity with all components individually removable for easy replacement (overall size 1.5 by 1.5 by 4.4 cm) are discussed.
