Underwater Sound: A Review of Its Effects on Sharks.

Abstract

Reprints are provided of three published studies on underwater sound and its effects on the behavior of sharks. Subjects include those species of sharks which have been attracted to sound sources, the physical factors which appear to be important or unimportant for an acoustical attractant, and the behavior of sharks in the vicinity of a sound source. Emphasis is directed also at those qualities of sound that promote withdrawal from a sound source by three species of sharks, Carcharhinus falciformis, C. longimanus and Negaprion brevirostris.
