Studies of Transient Discharges.

Abstract

Progress during the time period June 15, 1978 through June 14, 1979 in our program to study the basic physical processes responsible for laser-induced breakdown of spark gaps is reported. Major accomplishments during the period include (1) the measurement of temporally and spatially resolved electron densities during and after the arc phase, (2) the study of the initial buildup of charge and current in these gaps, and (3) improvements in the data acquisition equipment used in the work. Evidence of a shock front seen in the electron density data was obtained. (Author)
