U.S. Strategy in the Event of a Failure of Detente.

Abstract

This study identifies and assesses the alternative integrated U.S. strategies for a future situation in which: (1) detente collapses; (2) the Cold War resumes; and (3) the avoidance of conflict between the superpowers continues to be a mutually shared objective. The differing perceptions and objectives of detente from the U.S. and Soviet perspectives, and the factors which could cause detente to fail are analyzed as a framework for examination of the U.S. options and their military implications.
