The NORDA/FLENUMOCEANCEN Thermodynamical Ocean Prediction System (TOPS): A Technical Description.

Abstract

The Thermodynamical Ocean Predition System (TOPS) is a general and flexible software framework for operational implementation of upper ocean forecast models at Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center (FLENUMOCEANCEN), Monterey, California. It was developed by NORDA Code 322 as a part of the Navy's Automated Environmental Prediction System (AEPS). TOPS is fully interfaced with the FLENUMOCEANCEN operational data base and meets all FLENUMOCEANCEN programming standards for operational programs. This technical note discusses the uses for TOPS, provides documentation of the physics currently represented in the system, indicates probable future developments, and briefly addresses the problem of forecast verification.
