Solar Insolation Recording System (SIRS) Reference Manual.

Abstract

This manual provides the installation procedures, theory of operation, and maintenance procedures necessary to install, operate, calibrate, maintain and understand the Solar Insolation Recording System (SIRS) which is a microcomputer-based data acquisition system used to collect solar insolation data. Traditionally solar data has been collected in an analog format (strip chart). Large quantities of data were particularly difficult to manipulate. Therefore, to simplify the processing of data, a data acquisition system was designed and built which produced a computer compatible data medium. In the case of SIRS, the data media is digital cassette tapes. These tapes can be read into a larger computer where complex data manipulation/processing can be accomplished. This document strictly addresses the data acquisition system. Data reduction and manipulation will be covered in the final technical report on Solar Radiation Measuring. (Author)
