Acquisition of a Mnemonic System for Digit Span.

Abstract

After more than 6 months of practice on the memory span task, a single subject was able to increase his digit span from 7 digits to about 40 digits. This memory feat is accomplished with the development of a mnemonic system and a control structure for retaining the order of items. There is no evidence of an increase in short-term memory capacity.
