Adhesive Bonding Experiments for Titanium 6 Aluminum 4 Vanadium (Ti6Al4V). Part I. Anodization Treatments.

Abstract

Evaluations of surface treatments for adhesive bonding of Ti6Al4V were carried out using lap shear, peel and thick-thin wedge tests. Anodization to form dense oxides from 100-3000 A in thickness had little effect on bond strength or durability. Properties were governed by chemical pretreatments. Fluorine present in the anodization bath can cause oxide/alloy failures and should be avoided. (Author)
