Propulsion System Vibration Test and Evaluation Report USCGC KATMAI BAY.

Abstract

Alternating thrust, torque, and thrustbearing housing vibration were measured on United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) KATMAI BAY during open water, brash ice, and ice breaking operations. For open water operation the propulsion system complies with all requirements of MIL-STD-167-2. Longitudinal and torsional natural frequencies of the propulsion system were identified. The statistical distribution of peak alternating thrust amplitudes due to brash ice operation was found to be skewed and therefore not normal or Gaussian. (Author)
