The Population Ecology of a Rare and Endangered Plant Species, 'Cirsium rhothophilum' on Vandenberg AFB, California.

Abstract

This is a report of a study carried out on Vandenberg AFB and directed primarily towards one species--the Surf thistle (Cirsium rhothophilum)--a rare plant restricted to the coastal dunes of Santa Barbara and southern San Luis Obispo Counties. The study was undertaken in the belief that this species can be protected without having to impose unrealistically severe restrictions on the operation of the base. But even though the scope of this study is narrow, we hope that it will have implications for the entire dune ecosystem, for all of Vandenberg AFB, and perhaps for other Air Force installations faced with problems in the management of rare and endangered species.
