Reentry Antenna Test (RANT) Program. Volume 2. Linear Plasma Model. Addendum

Abstract

In Volume 2 of the RANT preliminary report we discussed the ground plane model for predicting the effect of a reentry plasma on aperture antennas. In that volume we also began the discussion of the cylinder model, (i.e., apertures on a plasma covered infinite cylinder). In this volume we conclude the discussion of the cylinder model. However, for completeness, we repeat some of the discussion contained in Volume 2. In modeling the plasma the effects of high temperatures have been intentionally omitted. Their inclusion would substantially increase the complexity of the calculations without significant compensatory gain in accuracy. Analysis indicated that the error contribution would be essentially small (only a few percentage points) at the electron densities, collision frequencies, and temperatures of interest.
