Necessary and Sufficient Conditions for Optimal Control of Quasilinear Partial Differential Systems.

Abstract

This paper studies the problem of optimal control of quasilinear partial differential systems. A maximum principle necessary condition is derived and shown to be sufficient when the Hamiltonian and boundary conditions satisfy a convexity condition. The derivation is made using Stokes theorem and a generalized version of Green's theorem. Management science applications are suggested to problems of cattle ranching, perishable inventories, manpower planning, and advertising. (Author)
