Calculations Pertaining to the Energy Balance and Plasma Motions in the Ionosphere.

Abstract

Plasma motions in the upper atmosphere have been investigated with the aid of satellite data. It is shown that the major ion, O(+), moves in response to the sum of the forces on itself and on electrons. Major ions follow the motion of the major ion. The observed plasma velocity in the vertical direction is in harmony with the assumption of an eastward electric field of between 3 and 5 millivolts per meter. The present investigation demonstrates clearly the need for measurements of electric fields and plasma drifts. (Author)
