A Boundary-Layer Theory for the Anisotropic Plate.

Abstract

To our knowledge the results of the pioneering paper on the boundary layer theory for plates by K. O. Friedrichs and R. F. Dressler have not been extended to anisotropic plates. Yet the basic conclusion of the above paper, namely that the equations of the three dimensional isotropic elasticity can be split into two independent systems seems to have been accepted by some authors to include also the case of anisotropic elasticity. While this happens to be true it is by no means obvious as the following presentation illustrates; hence, we believe our providing a detailed analysis of the orthotropic plate will be of interest to researchers in the field of composite materials and laminates.
