Spares Costs and Availability for the XM-1: A Methodological Demonstration

Abstract

This report discusses the implications to Defense planners of the relationships among the reliability, availability, and spares investment goals of the Army's XM-1 program. The analysis presented demonstrates a method for estimating these relationships based on data available early in the life of a weapon system. The study also examines the effects on availability and spares costs of the extent to which opportunities exist for cannibalization in wartime scenarios. (Author)
