Fourier Series on Spheres - A Geometric Perspective.

Abstract

A new function for the Fourier decomposition of a scalar function on spheres is derived from geometric considerations. The function is amenable to fast transforms and is useful as a basis function in spectral simulation and prediction global atmospheric flows. This new expression is shown to belong to a family of such expressions that consists of two other known members. A brief comparison is made among the three in the family. (Author)
