Whither Dynamic Fracture Mechanics?

Abstract

The experimental basis for the necessity of a dynamic characterization of crack run/arrest events is reviewed. Current anomalies in the use of linear elastodynamic treatments--apparent geometry and load rate dependence of the dynamic fracture toughness property--are discussed. A review of concurrent work in plastic fracture mechanics is given as a possible basis for circumventing these anomalies. (Author)
