Studies in Aromatic and Amine Nitration.

Abstract

Nitrogen tetroxide (N2O4) reacts very slowly with benzene. Only after reaction at high temperature or for very long periods is some nitration observed. It is reported here on nitrations in N2O4 systems that are rapid at 0 C and appears to represent a new route to aromatic nitration. As it will be discussed, the rates of aromatic nitration as well as the distribution of isomers in products from the system are significantly different from those obtained classically in mixed acid systems.
