The Semantic Interpretation on Noun-Noun Modification by Computer.

Abstract

This paper is a proposal for a Ph.D. thesis concerned with the semantic interpretation of noun-noun modification. The study of this topic is being coordinated with the development of the JETS natural language question answering system. One of the goals of this research is a computer program which will interpret instances of noun-noun modification within the domain of discourse of JETS. Related work on noun-noun modification in the disciplines of Linguistics and Artificial Intelligence is described and contrasted to the proposed research. The basic approach being taken is described and the scope of the work is outlined. (Author)
