Concept Evaluation for Ocean Shear Profiler.
Abstract
The concept of an acoustic vorticity meter for use as an oceanographic velocity shear profiler is evaluated. The vorticity measurement minimizes several noise sources including translational components of platform motion which severely degrade more traditional water velocity measurements, and it prewhitens the data. Present technology is capable of yielding a vorticity noise floor of 0.001 per second, or shear of 0.001 m/s/m, in an array size of 50 cm.
