Evaluation of High L/D Earth Penetrators.

Abstract

This report develops an approach for performing parametric studies of high L/D earth penetrators by using the primary response frequencies and modes. The applicability has been demonstrated by performing correlation studies of test data, detailed response analysis, and the simplified approach. The parameters that may be varied are impact velocity, angle-of-attack, target material, and penetrator strength. The preliminary results are that increased penetrator capability, at a given angle-of-attack, may be obtained at higher impact velocities because of the resonance phenomena. (Author)
