Scheme Independent Stability Criteria for Difference Approximations to Hyperbolic Initial Boundary Value Systems.

Abstract

We consider finite difference approximations to the mixed initial boundary value problems of the hyperbolic system v(t) = au(x) in the quarter plan x > 0, t > 0. The finite difference approximations may be either dissipative or non-dissipative. Easily checkable sufficient stability criteria are obtained entirely in terms of the boundary conditions for the out flow variables. It is shown how to extend the results for the two dimensional case when the boundary conditions in the y direction allow Fourier transformations. Examples are given. (Author)
