Synthesis of MCJ Codes.

Abstract

Constructive techniques are given for the encoding and decoding of Massey-Costello-Justesen (MCJ) error control block codes. These codes form a family of maximum distance separable (MDS) codes distinct from the Reed-Solomon (RS) codes. The MCJ codes offer ease of encoding and decoding for either hardware or software implementations, based on the more natural Galois ground field mathematical operations involved in the associated algorithms. Because of inherent burst error control capabilities, these codes can be considered for channel error protection as well as for end-to-end message error control.
