Derivation of the Variable Coefficient Korteweg-de Vries Equation Using Multitiming Techniques.

Abstract

The method of multiple scales or multitiming technique is used to derive the variable coefficient Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation. Three small and independent parameters are introduced, epsilon which gives a measure of the amplitude of the wave, micrometers which gives a measure of the shallowness of the water and therefore dispersive effects and delta which gives a measure of the modulation rate due to variations in the undisturbed depth of the water. The range of validity of the variable coefficient KdV equation is given in terms of these parameters and the propagation distance of the wave. (Author)
