Evaluation of Standard Ocean Candidates

Abstract

This report evaluates eight candidate models (AUTO-OCEAN, GDEM, ICAPS, ODSI, GFDL, HYDAT, SIMAS) for Standard Ocean--a system to provide oceanographic and acoustic data in 1 deg x 1 deg oceanic squares, formatted for NORDA's numerical acoustic models and usable by nonspecialists. Meeting or exceeding most criteria were AUTO-OCEAN (outputs seasonal, RSVP-retrieved, extended sound-speed profiles in northern hemisphere 5 deg x 5 deg squares, as well as bathymetric, wave height, and bottom class data; rapid, inexpensive, and operational, but resolution still too coarse); and GDEM (not yet operational, but will provide northern hemisphere temperature surface to 400 m, salinity surface to 800 m, and sound-speed surface to bottom data on a 30 minute x 30 minute grid; output generally agrees with observations, but sometimes falls outside range of observed data, shows peculiar deep seasonal shifts, or misrepresents primary and secondary sound channels).
