Planning is a Problem in Synthesis and not Simply of Analysis.

Abstract

This document postulates that any effort to achieve an objective is characterized by heuristic iterations of hypothesis and analysis. An emotion model that provides the motivation for the iterations of hypothesis and analysis is suggested. The emotion model and the experience with heuristic iterations of hypothesis and analysis are used to form a convergence postulate. The convergence postulate describes the general nature of the change that occurs with time in the probability of successful achievement of hypothesized scenarios. The concept of a taxonomy of hypothesized scenarios is briefly outlined and related to the convergence postulate. A planning strategy based on the use of the convergence postulate and a taxonomy of scenarios is outlined. (Author)
