Soviet Policy in the Middle East: Perspectives from Three Capitals.

Abstract

This memorandum evaluates the success of Soviet foreign policy in the Middle East. The author evaluates the success of Soviet policy by the following criteria: the changed configuration of regional alignments that emerge as a consequence of Soviet behavior; the extent to which US policy and interests are undermined; and the increments in Moscow's influence in specific countries or movements. The author concludes that Moscow views the Middle East as a growth stock--it really doesn't need much in the way of dividends for the time being, although it has already reaped a good deal. (Author)
