Effect of Load History on Fatigue Life.

Abstract

The primary objectives of this program are to: 1) study in detail how mechanical loading parameters affect the fatigue life of graphite/epoxy laminates; 2) determine the effects of environmental and geometrical perturbations on the effects studied in objective 1; 3) analyze the results in a manner such that an expanded foundation is laid for formulating fatigue life models based on knowledge of failure mechanisms. The research investigation is divided into four tasks: Task I, Diagnostic Experimentation: Task II, Effects of Loading Parameters; Task III, Effects of Environment and Geometry; Task IV, Data Analysis and Reporting. Tasks I, II and III are conducted sequentially while Task IV is conducted simultaneously with all three tasks. This report describes the analytical and experimental work undertaken in Task I.
