Spectral Distributions V. Visible Spectra of Standard and Improved Green Flare Compositions

Abstract

Visible spectra from standard Navy green flares and an improved green flare composition are presented and analyzed. The improved green flares are composed of boron, magnesium, barium nitrate, and a binder. Luminous intensities of 71000 cd and efficiencies of 11,000 cd.s/g have been obtained. Dominant wavelengths shorter than those of the standard green flare have also been obtained. Molecular emissions from boron oxides, barium oxides, and barium chlorides and various atomic emission features are observed.
