Research Study on Near Millimeter Wave Orotrons.

Abstract

An extensive literature search has been performed in technological areas related to the development of orotrons (electron-beam/open-resonator radiation sources) in the Soviet Union. Orotrons have been found to be practical, tunable, efficient, and lightweight sources of near millimeter wave radiation; our calculations have confirmed some of the conclusions obtained from the Soviet literature. No work on orotrons performed in the U.S. has been found. In work reported from the Soviet Union, power outputs of several watts have been obtained at wavelengths from 4 to 1 mm, with electron-beam voltages of 1 to 5 kV and currents up to a few hundred milliamperes.
