Navy Attrition and Turnover in Private Industry: Concepts, Measurement and Management.

Abstract

The Navy has had a significant problem in retaining personnel. Consequently, force loss (attrition) has been under study to determine the causes of and the appropriate steps needed to reduce force loss to a manageable rate. The current study addresses the methods used to control force loss in the private sector. Many private sector firms have been successful in maintaining a relatively low rate of force turnover. Current data from individual private sector companies and a review of the recent literature regarding force turnover provide the basis for the report. A comparison of methods used for the control of attrition between the Navy and the private sector is provided. (Author)
