A Critical Analysis of Management Indicators for the Director of Materiel Management, Sacramento ALC.

Abstract

Recent correspondence and conferences within the Air Force Logistics Command have questioned the reliability of management indicators as an information tool. The purpose of this thesis was to prove or disprove that contention through an analysis of the management indicators periodically reviewed by the Director of Materiel Management at the Sacramento Air Logistics Center. Questionnaires and personal interviews were used as the means to define D/MM objectives and goals. The indicators themselves were defined and then evaluated in terms of their information contribution to decision making and in turn to the achievement of goals and objectives. The objectives were also classified into a hierarchy of information needs to establish the time spans for planning and control. Our research findings concluded that the present information system is process oriented and, therefore, of little value in strategic planning. Present indicators are inadequate to meet the D/MM's information needs. (Author)
