Improving Team Performance: Proceedings of the Rand Team Performance Workshop.
Abstract
This report presents the proceedings of a workshop investigating options for future research on improving team and team performance. Experts in gaming and simulation, organization theory, small group processes, cognitive psychology, training and instruction, decision theory, artificial intelligence, and human engineering presented views on potential contributions of their respective disciplines. Discussions focused on various issues including current problems in Navy team performance, desirability of studying teams in their operational environments, the need for specifying training objectives prior to instructional design, and the need for designing team research programs before establishing a dedicated team research facility. Promising areas for future research are identified, including team performance modeling, team structure, team communications, training techniques, machine aids for task performance, and organizational determinants of performance.
