On the Identifiability of Multivariate Life Distribution Functions.

Abstract

By observing a series of d components (d = 2, 3, ...) one can only determine its lifelength and the components that cause the system to fail. In particular the lifelength of a series system that consists of a nonempty subset of the original d components is unobservable. It is referred to the distribution function (d.f.) of the lifelength of this series system as an unobservable d.f. For example, some of the original d components, such as wires and switches, may be placed in the system to support the operation of the main components. The d.f. of the lifelength of the series system that consists of the main component is of great importance to the theory of engineering reliability but is unobservable.
