Three-Dimensional Finite Element Combustion Instability Analysis,

Abstract

The NASTRAN finite element analysis is axisymmetric and approximates the effect of radial slots on the cavity acoustics. As long as the slot width is relatively narrow, the approximation provides an accurate model of the cavity acoustic response, but as the slot width increases, the accuracy diminishes. The NASTRAN option as used in the standardized method does not provide for the coupling of the vibratory response of the solid propellant grain to that of the acoustic cavity and hence does not provide a means of evaluating the damping of the acoustic oscillations by the propellant grain response.
