Nuclear Radiation Effects in Fiber-Optic Waveguides,

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify an optical waveguide which has a good chance for meeting the Army's requirements for a radiation-hardened fiber-optic communication system. To accomplish this goal we have carried out an experimental research program on a wide variety of commercially available optical waveguides and research prototypes. Glass-clad, high-silica fibers, suitable for long-length telecommunications applications, were studied.
